Butterfly Collection

A Big Box of Butterflies.. High on top of big, army green metal cabinets, stacked 3 high in a store room on the 3rd floor of Exley, sat a large cardboard box. Chances are very good it had been sitting there unmolested for at least 50 years. On clambering up to take a look, we found that it was labeled on top in big block letters: BUTTERFLIES. Not something expected in a room ostensibly devoted to the storage of fossils and minerals (well, this high perch was also home to a mature male peacock and a very dilapidated pelican). Indeed, the box contained almost 300 beautifully mounted butterflies, and a few other insects- clearly ready to take their place in the newly named George Brown Goode Biological Collections.
